Apples on a Tree Apples on a Tree

A great alternative to mango chutney on poppadums.


  • 3Kg cooking apples (chopped and peeled)
  • 1Kg Onions (peeled and chopped)
  • 1tbsp salt
  • 2tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1l vinegar
  • 1.5Kg Brown Sugar

For the spice bag:

  • 50g bruised ginger
  • 1 cinnamon stick

Making Apple Chutney

  1. Simmer the apples, onions, and the spice bag for 20 mins in 300ml water)
  2. Add the remaining ingredients and simmer for 2 ½-3 hours until ready to pot
  3. Spoon into sterilised jars with vinegar proof lids and leave for a couple of months to mature.
